Epidural for Painless Delivery (Normal delivery birth experience )

(Continued From Normal Delivery Birth Experience- Actual Labor Pain)

The labor pain started getting worse. Around 10 AM it was totally unbearable for me. I had my mum on side of bed and husband on other side. I asked both of them to stay, though as per hospital rules only one member was allowed. Some doctor came to check and I wasnt dilated much. Only 2cm.

My abdomen and legs were paining badly. Mom and husband were helping me by massaging my legs. Every time the contraction was over, I would say to myself, now I will be strong, I will bear it. But nothing worked. I lost track of time.

After sometime my Obstetrician, Dr Shefali, came and checked, I was 3cm dilated by then. She spoke to me and asked “How is the pain?” To which I replied “too bad, unbearable.” Then she asked me to rate the intensity of pain on a scale of 10. “7-8″ or even more.” I said.

Dr. Shefali” Really, you are just 30% and you are saying 8!!!”

Me”Yes. Its paining too much.”

Doctor went outside and instructed to prepare for epidural. (so epidural is process of injecting on the spinal cord. It is given to relieve from the labor pain. Basically for painless normal delivery. }There are certain side effects of epidural, but obviously at that point of time, I was ready to do anything to get baby out of my uterus safely and without this pain. I was feeling I would faint.

I was prepared for epidural. Dr. in anesthesia gives the dose. A doctor came in with few nurses (both male and female.) Doctor was male, and I got bit uncomfortable with males entering the room. I was not dressed properly and just covered with a robe. Then I could do nothing about it, I was in so much pain that I couldnt object. So, I accepted the fact that I am helpless and this is doctor’s job, they are not here to stare at my body. They look at several such patients in a day. So a male or female doc hardly matters.

My husband and mum were asked to leave the room and door was shut. I was completely in hands of strangers. Now they could do anything with me.

I was asked to sit up, and hold myself tight in a particular position. Head down, no hand movement, not even a slightest movement was allowed. I felt that to be quite impractical being in labour pain. I mean, I was in so much of pain and I wanted to wriggle and they expect not to move at all. I tired my best, probabyly even they tried their best and tried to inject. Unfortunately after 2-3 attempts, the correct point was not found. Then two male nurses, held me tightly. One was holding my hands and front and another held my neck and back tightly. After 2nd attempt I felt something flowing inside my body. Doctor asked”Do you Feel Some liquid passing through”.

“Yes, but only on the right side” I replied wondering if this would reduce pain only on the right side. Doc said it was fine. Then they attached something to my back and asked me to lie down. I think they put something to inject further doses as and when required. Finally after spending quite a long time with me, door was opened they went out and I was asked to lie down.

I was hoping some effect. I called the nurse and said I couldnt feel anything. They said it will take sometime. After a while I could feel some numbness only on the right side. The labour pain was still bad and getting worse. Probably the epidural didnt work for me. I was crying loud and shouting. The entire floor could hear my roar but I didnt care. I was the one feeling the pain. I felt like would faint. My husband and my mum kept me alive.

Normal Delivery Birth Experience- Actual Labor Pain

{ Continued from Normal Delivery Birth Experience Part 1}

I started feeling some pain in abdomen, naturally. While my husband was there, I was constantly complaining about-  the pain, uncomfortable clothing which was open from back; pain in palm due to needle prick etc. Then my mom took him home for dinner  and he got a break from those nag. It was my sister-in law’s (bhabhi)  time to be with me. I was talking to her constantly about random things. We were enjoying and I wasn’t even complaining. (May be because two ladies were too engrossed in chit-chatting or; possibly because we complain only to those whom we are the closest). Mom and my husband came back after an hour. I think it was around 11.30 pm. Others wished me and left for home.

Around 12 midnight a junior doctor came to insert the cervical gel for labour induction.  I thought it would pain and asked the same to the doctor.  She negated and inserted something with the nozzle attached to the gel tube, gave instruction to the nurse and asked to monitor me and left. I felt nothing much. Only some liquidish feeling inside. Then my gynaec / obstetrician arrived and said to repeat the dose at 6.30am if required.

Only one person could stay with me in delivery room (LDR). My hospital room was also booked. My husband and mom decided to take turns among them- so, one person sleeps in the hospital room and other one to stay with me, on a chair kept in LDR.

I couldnt sleep well entire night. Firstly, cause of clothing, secondly cause of the drip going on, thirdly due to the beeping sound made by the machine attached to my abdomen, fourthly out of anxiety. AS soon as I would try to turn to sleep on side, the machine would start beeping loudly. Nurse had told, loud beep means , it’s an alert. I didn’t know the difference between alert beep and normal beep, so I kept calling nurse- coz no risk to be taken with the baby. Also I had to call nurse few times to remove the device connected to me as wanted to pee. I was given dose of enema as well, to clear my bowel, but I couldnt poop. Somehow, the night passed and it was 6.30 in the morning.

Another dose to induce labor was given. I already started having some discomfort .Around 7am, I asked if I can get all the attachments removed and if I could walk. Fortunately, I was allowed. I started walking to bear the growing pain. I realised, the actual labour pain had started. It was coming every 10minutes. The pain  kept on increasing and the intervals kept on decreasing. That time I was there with my sis in law. Morning my husband and mum had left to freshen up. By 8am my husband arrived at the hospital to be with me.

I was no more allowed to walk. As doctor said monitoring was necessary. I was asked to lie straight on the bed. Catheter was connected so that I don’t have to get up and go to the restroom. I started feeling like a puppet of doctors. Have to follow what they say.

I was totally packed with all the instruments or monitoring machines etc. Not permitted to move much. I was in too much pain. I wanted to move, turn, wriggle to soothe myself.

I was feeling too hungry, but for some reason I was not allowed to eat food. I called for coconut water, instead got lime juice after a long wait. The pain was getting worse. !!

The First Time Grandpa

In hindi we say “asal se jyada sood pyaara hota hai” . Means “interest is more precious that principal”. All parents in the world are most excited to be grandparents, and grandparents are the ones who pampers a child the most. Anything own child does is a sin, but if the grandchild does then its a bliss.

So, I hope you can imagine, being Grandpa for first time can be how big for a very emotional and caring Dad.

As I mentioned in one of my earliest posts The Curiousity , I got to know about my pregnancy on 29th October 2018. The next thing in my mind was, I need to tell this to people in style, not just normal. To make it big for them, for me and for baby .

2018, end of October and start of November was full of celebrations. I announced Daddy to be  and Dada to be , now was the turn for Nana to be.

I talk to my mom almost everyday, and I am someone who is bad at hiding own secrets. As per my plan, I had to keep this big secret with me for 10 days, without telling my mom. I decided to plan a surprise for Dad’s upcoming birthday on 8th November.

I got a Coffee Mug with “Nana to be” printed on it and made a peel-off-to-reveal card for his birthday. Got it wrapped and sent through Bluedart courier service. I sent it to my brother’s office address and strictly told him – that ‘package has to be opened by DAD only on his birthday and you must record a video’.

No one had any idea about the fact. I kept on talking to my mom. kept telling her about my dietary changes, that I started eating more frequently, stopped eating outside food, having coconut water daily. She was surprised but was happy about me getting towards a healthier lifestyle. She had no clue about the reason. She must also be thinking, that if there is some other reason, I would obviously tell her first, but I planned differently.

Dad got the gift of 8th November midnight around 12.30AM. First he took out the card, which read

“Happy Birthday

Yesterday was diwali

today you turned 64

we have got a surpise to make it much more”

IMG_20181031_130454__01.jpgInside the card, I hid whatever was written, with making tape. He had to peel off to read.

It read

No more just papa papa

no more just pola pola

be prepared for rona dhona

and to hear nana nana!!

IMG_20181031_131347__01.jpgIt was a big shocker for everyone. A true surprise and a memorable birthday gift for Dad!

(Card is not a neat one. It was made in hurry.so please ignore the look n finish also spelling. Content was important)

Normal Delivery Birth Experience- 1st time in Hospital

3rd July I was having slight pain in stomach, discomfort sort of. My blood sugar levels were also high and 6th July was my due date. My Gynaec suggested to get admitted in hospital on 4th evening. She adviced not to delay the delivery, high blood sugar may affect the baby. After an internal check up, she said my body was ready for delivery and further labour pain can be induced so that I deliver the next day.

Induced labor is simply an external induction of labor pain if it doesnt happen naturally on time. A gel is inserted through the opening to dilate the cervix and get pains. The pains are like completely natural and delivery also happens normally once the pain starts. Usually 2-3 dose of gel is required which are given at certain hours of interval (as per my experience), one dose at a time.

So, I discussed with my husband what to do. Most importantly to check if it was possible for him to be there when I get admitted to Labor room. [I was staying at my Mom’s place since I was 35 weeks preg. My husband was in another city, had a business trip planned for 4-6th July.] There was lots of confusion around how important it was for me to get admitted the next day. whether we could wait for 2 more days. After of discussions among us, family members and others, finally he decided to postpone his work plans and take this as priority. He decided to come to Bangalore from Mumbai and then meet the doctor, take a decision and then plan ahead. He reached 4th July evening around 6.30PM.

4th July was a restless day for me. Excited to see my husband after long! highly restless and excited to meet my baby and become a Mommy! worried about the pains! my first time delivery and have heard labor pains are extreme. ! First time in hospital! Praying for everything to be fine! baby to be born safe and Healthy!. Plus some pains ! huh! too much going on.

So my husband came at 6.30 PM. I was supposed to be admitted by 8.00 PM. I prepared my hospital bag. Had my dinner quickly. Others opted to have dinner after getting me admitted. My brother came early from office. TO accompany us to the hospital. So we all , my mom, dad, bro, hubby and ofcourse I, left home at around 8. The hospital was nearby. Took us 15-20 mins to reach. Completed all the hospital formalities and I was assigned a delivery room. There was another lady also getting admitted for labor induction and delivery in the next room.

The room was quite big. I was asked to remove “all” my clothes and change into a operation gown, made of non woven cloth. It was designed like a bathrobe. So I wore it with opening in front, but then nurse told me that opening was supposed to go at the back. Oops! My bad.

I laid down on the Hospital bed. Two nurses came, one was holding my hand and about to prick me and another was doing something in my abdomen area. To the abs the connected a device to monitor labor pains or something and fetal heartbeat. On my hand she was trying to prick and needle and set up saline for me to get lot of energy. I asked nurse “sister what are doing with my hand. Are you going prick me and insert something. Will it pain”. She was ridiculed. She said “havent you seen something like this, havent you got this done earlier” as if it was obvious. I said no, why would I.

The device was set and saline drip was set. My family members were coming turn by turn. Going home in sets for dinner. My husband and Mom were to stay back overnight with me

I was waiting for induction gel to be inserted.

How I controlled my Gestational Diabetes

As I mentioned in my previous post, I was diagnosed with having high blood sugar, just on the verge of diabetes. I was determined to control it for 4 reasons:

  1. I didnt want to start medication for something as I knew lesser the medicines better for baby and mom. Necessary vitamins tablets were enough
  2. Didnt want to start visiting another specialist doctors. I have always hated visiting doctors.
  3. I wanted my pregnancy to be normal
  4. Most importantly, I didnt want my baby to be born or affected with any disease. I want her/him to be healthy inside me and in the outside world as well.

I have a family history of diabetes. Both at my family side and in- laws family as well. So, I had lots of sugar control advise pouring in. No direct sugar and no indirect sugar , that means no sugar in tea coffee milk, no high sugar fruits. Most difficult was to avoid mangoes which is  a favourite in summer season. After a wait of 1 year (rather 8-9 months) we get fresh mangoes. But avoiding it was must. Mangoes are a big-time enemies in diabetes.

So here’s what I started :

I avoided adding direct sugar to any of my food or drinks.

No ice-creams chocolates, cakes, waffles, desserts or any sort of sweets.

No coconut water (I used to consume it daily)

No mangoes obviously (but honestly I cheated sometimes, like once a week)

I reduced my one time eating portion. (after losing weight in 1st trimester I started eating more and more quite reluctantly in 2nd trimester so that I could gain some weight . (Facepalm))

I started taking smaller meals at gap of 3-4 hours.

Now the most important: I started walking outdoors daily. On my 1st day itself I started with 3km in 45 minutes and continued it. I walk 3-4.5 kms that is for 45- 60 mins. I try to walk at least 3-4 days in a week at least.

I started doing yoga daily. My instructor used to come only for 2 days in a week. Rest of the days practised on my own.

The results:

We have a blood sugar testing instrument at home. Within 2 days my blood sugar almost in normal range, but not normal as per my doc. After 10day the post lunch reading was normal but bit high in fasting. (It should be below 90 in pregnancy mine was 95).

My doctor asked to control more and quit protein powder with sugar. So I replaced it with diabetics protein powder.

Within next 1 week my blood sugar was completely in safe range and my doctor was quite satisfied and appreciated my efforts in controlling.

Gestational Diabetes and how to control it

All my test reports were mostly good throughout until I had my next set of blood tests at 25 weeks. I had CBC (complete blood count )test and GTT (Glucose tolerance test)

Tests were done taking blood sample and urine sample, but there is a process for GTT test. Note: Some doctors write GCT (Glucose challenge test). There is a slight difference in process of taking the test but purpose is more or less similar.

GTT process:  Doctor will prescribe a glucose powder which has to be consumed first thing in the morning. You need to dissolve the glucose powder in certain amount of water (For me it was 75gm of powder in 300ml water) and the drink it empty stomach. We are not supposed to move around or do much physical activity till blood sample is taken. I had give blood sample in 2 hours. So, I consumed glucose water and slept back again for 2 hours.

I was surprised to see my blood sugar level. It was too high.

I had iron deficiency as well. Low haemoglobin.

Even doctor was disappointed, as until now everything was going well, my weight, blood count wbc rbc haemoglobin etc. Sudddenly everything was disturbed. I was losing weight in 1st trimester (I didnt vomit in 1st trimester) and suddenly gained 8 kgs in a span of less than 2 months. I gained 1 kg per week on average.

Actually, I got tensed as I was losing weight and everyone around was telling me that I am not consuming enough food. Even I thought gaining weight would be better. So, I started eating everything which I used to avoid- Potatoes( Aloo ki sabzi, aloo toast etc,) Puris (fried indian bread), lots of sweets (my favs were rasagulla, rasmalai), bananas and everything that would help me gain weight.

I was strictly advised to control weight and follow diabetic diet. I was given 1 week’s deadline by doctor to bring my sugar level back to normal ; else I had to see a endocrinologist and start medication.

FYI normal sugar levels for pregnancy is below 90 at fasting and below 120 postprandial. (as my advised by my doctor)

I was quite worried yet determined to not take additional medicines and visit any other specialist doctor. I strongly believed that I can bring my blood sugar level back to normal.

Did I get success in it and what did I do is in the next post. !!

Take away pointers

  • Its OK to lose weight in 1st Trimester
  • Dont listen to everyone around.
  • Stick to eating healthy. It helps mom and well as proper growth of Baby.
  • It is very common to have gestational diabetes.
  • If you have family history of Diabetics then you are more likely to get gestational diabetes.
  • Most important * having diabetes can have effects on baby also.
  • Keep check on your weight.
  • Dont gain too much. Till end of third trimester you must gain 10-12 kgs.
  • if possible monitor blood sugar from 2nd trimester onwards at home.
  • Dont miss iron calcium tablets.

Hope this helps

28th Week Doppler Scan

My last scan was in early February. That was the last time I saw my baby on screen. Since last 2 months, I was eagerly waiting for the next scan day to come. I so much wanted to see whats going on within. What the baby is actually doing when I am so much happening in the tummy- kicks, turns, shocks, hardening on one side , one part of tummy swelling, something constantly knocking my belly, so so much. All this was really exciting as well as troubling sometimes.

16th April 2019, I booked an appointment for Doppler Scan (as recommended by my doctor ) and a subsequent consultation from treating obstetrician. I went to the Hospital and couldnt wait to complete the formalities. I asked the nurse to take me inside the sonography room, and that my husband will complete the documentation. I was in a Hurry to see the baby (also it was office time, husband was getting late too).

The scan started and Radiologist showed me something round and oval shape. I was wondering what is it, then the Doc said its the Head. Then in another image, she showed me Stomach (another round thing), then the heart. Then from some angle we got to see hands and later legs. After a minute doctor showed something and said this is the face and here is nose.  I felt why everything is so zoomed in. So I said Radiologist, “Can’t I see my full baby in single image.”. To which she replied negative. 😦

She said “now the baby is too big to be seen in a single image” Then I got to know that my baby was over 1 kg now.  Grown more than 3 times since I last saw. Her/His current size of just the head would the size of baby in February. .

Still,  I could see nose at least and shut eyelids. Nose looked like baby’s dad’s nose.

I was happy, that everything was normal- Water in the womb, baby’s growth, heartbeat and everything else.

Doctor Consultation

Last time I visited, doctor was concerned about my fast growing weight and increased blood sugar levels. First trimester, I didnt gain any weight, rather I lost a kg. While in the second trimester I had already gained 9kgs by 21st week.

This time my weight was same (actually a few hundred grams lesser than last time), thanks to yoga and walk which I started plus a diet control. Blood Sugar levels had also dropped, but it wasnt upto doctor’s satisfaction. She wanted before breakfast reading to be below 90, mine was 95, post lunch reading to be below 120, mine was 104.

Still I was suggested to strictly follow a healthy and diabetic diet, so that my blood sugar levels are below 90. So I had to stopp eating mangoes now, which are a favorite in the summer season, but cravings becomes secondary when it comes to health and primarily when the is a Life growing inside.

My Pregnancy Yoga.

I started practicing yoga when I was around five and half months pregnant. I saw some videos online regarding what Yogasana and Yog Pranayaamas are safe in Pregnancy. I started with some pranayam which I felt were really safe. Then I also hired a Yoga instructor.

Here is how we start :

(Disclaimer: This is completely based on what I am practicing, I am not a professional instructor or doctor, just a pregnant mother. These are my experiences only)

First we started with prayers.

Sit on yoga mat in Sukhasana or Padmasana. Keep back straight and chin parallel to the ground. Close eyes and take deep breath. Then we start with three Omkar Chants. Take a deep breath and say Om. There will be a longer sound of Ooooo and shorter duration of mmmm. This is repeated 3 times. (I think we can chant this as many times as comfortable. 5 , 7 or 11). Then we say Gayatri Mantra, and 2 other shanti mantras. These mantras and Omkar chant are believed to have positive vibrations.

Then we did some pranayams and then exercises to loosen up the joints and all parts of the body.

This was followed by certain Yogasana or Yoga poses. My instructor has recommended me to practice Butterfly pose and Cat pose Daily.

Baby Kicks- in the Tummy

While we lovely ladies develop a new human inside us, there are lot of changes that happen in our body and the baby’s anatomy. These changes bring in lots of discomfort for us. We face all of those to grow a  healthy baby, whom we cant even see (except for the days of Ultrasound scan. We dont know whats going on there inside actually. Some of us do not even feel much difference in the first trimester. But then second trimester comes with surprises for the First time mommies.

Around 18-22 weeks we start noticing some flutters, some poking, some bubbles in lower abdomen. And then, suddenly we realize its neither gas or any any stomach disorder. Its the human inside us who is learning to do different things.

I dont remember the exact day when I first noticed my baby kick. Its my first pregnancy and I had no idea whether the feeling in tummy is due to the food or the baby. Sometimes, in the 19th week I thought these must be baby movements, but then again I thought , that might be gas bubbles. Its just my mind which is saying its baby movements, coz i have been reading on internet that we start feeling movements by 18th week.

At my 21st week I had doctor visit. Then the gynaec asked me whether, I have started feeling movements. To that I responded “probably no”. “you should start feeling in next few weeks. Observe those” The doc said.

Next day morning I felt something in my stomach. I told my husband that I could feel baby move. To that he laughed off and said its all in your mind, because yesterday doc said baby must be moving. After sometime baby moved again and I asked him to feel it. But my naughty baby didnt respond. This continued till almost a week. Baby wouldnt respond whenever his/her Dad would be around to feel. Then once I recorded a video of my tummy and sent him the movements, for him to believe and enjoy.

Since then, baby movements are increasing and getting harder. I could really feel hard sometimes. My lil one gets very active at night (not sure if its same with everyone). Sometimes its really difficult to sleep. He/She has started waking me up at midnight with kicks. Although with all the difficulties, everytime my baby move, I smile from within.

This is the next most amazing feeling. I feel connected with my baby and now I have started talking more to my baby.

Nowadays, what I feel is baby responds quite a lot to his Dads voice. He/She would definitely make some movement when her dad is talking.

As I go through this journey of pregnancy, my love for baby is growing with each day. Each day makes me realize, the behind the special bond of a mother and child. Now I understand my mother much better, I am understanding why a mom can go out of the way to do anything for her child.

Love and Salute to all the Moms and Parents ❤

AnteNatal Classes (Yoga vs Physiotherapy)

During my last visit to Doctor, that’s around when I was 20 weeks pregnant, she suggested me to start with Antenatal Classes. We didnt have much idea about. Many of us wouldnt know about it in First Pregnancy. So, I started doing some research about it to gather more information.

Before that, what do we mean by Antenatal Classes?

The word ‘antenatal’ means ‘before birth’ relating to pregnancy mostly. If we break the word into ante and natal. Ante means- before or in front of . Natal means relating to birth( nay be a time or place as well). So antenatal care is complete care required during pregnancy period. Antenatal is also know as Prenatal.

Antenatal classes basically prepares the couple/ or just the mother for the journey of pregnancy. It focuses on labour and birth. There are classes to prepare mind and body of the mother to prepare her for the labour and to ensure smooth journey of birthing. Then there are some couple workshops which prepare the couple to take care of the baby pre and post birth. Workshops  guided towards nutrition both post and pre-birth, lactation classes, workshops for imparting spirituality in the unborn baby are also there. To be parents can choose from the workshops as per their convenience.

I decided to go for classes which would prepare me for labour and birthing. This is most important for a smoother pregnancy. I had 3 options with me :

  1. Get entire prenatal consultation at the Hospital where I was seeing my Gynaecologist
  2. Just Physiotherapy classes somewhere outside
  3. Yoga classes.

The Hospital consultation  included many things- Dietitian/ Nutritionist consultation, physiotherapy consultation(just consultation), lactation sessions, Lamaze classes in last month (breathing exercises),  managing baby affairs etc. It also included post natal classes, like consultation on pregnancy weight loss, lactation etc. I found this option to be bit costly and not of primary requirement for me. I wanted some exercises or yoga to prepare me for delivery.

I started exploring Physiotherapy classes and Yoga classes for Moms-to-be. Unfortunately, I couldnt find any group classes. Yes that was unfortunate, because I mostly stay indoors since the time I am pregnant and classes would be a nice way to meet new people and exchange vibes.

After much inquiry,  I cut down on one Physiotherapy and one yoga centre. Both were one-on-one sessions. Before choosing one of these, I decided to opt for 1 day trial class for both.

My physiotherapy class was done at the centre. There I met a Doctor graduated in Physiotherapy. She assessed my entire file to understand if there are any complications in pregnancy, and whether and what kind of exercises would be safe and useful for me. There was nothing much to assess with my pregnancy. I found the assessment session to be a waste of money. I realised the session was mostly for a Yes or no to go ahead with Physio. The exercises in the trial class were though good. Simple ones for 1st class.

Then was the turn to try out yoga. Infact after my physio session, I had decided to go ahead with Yoga, before the try out session of yoga. Yoga session was at home, as per my time and convenience. My instructor was a post graduate and diploma holder in Yoga, power yoga and naturotherapy and 5yrs experienced. We started with some discussion on benefits and safety of Yoga. We did some prayers, then breathing exercises and then warm-up, and some asanas.

Yoga was definitely the choice I had to make. What I felt is,

Physio trains the body, but yoga is for entire mind, body and soul. I believe, regular practice of Yoga would also help in calming the mind of the baby.
