How I controlled my Gestational Diabetes

As I mentioned in my previous post, I was diagnosed with having high blood sugar, just on the verge of diabetes. I was determined to control it for 4 reasons:

  1. I didnt want to start medication for something as I knew lesser the medicines better for baby and mom. Necessary vitamins tablets were enough
  2. Didnt want to start visiting another specialist doctors. I have always hated visiting doctors.
  3. I wanted my pregnancy to be normal
  4. Most importantly, I didnt want my baby to be born or affected with any disease. I want her/him to be healthy inside me and in the outside world as well.

I have a family history of diabetes. Both at my family side and in- laws family as well. So, I had lots of sugar control advise pouring in. No direct sugar and no indirect sugar , that means no sugar in tea coffee milk, no high sugar fruits. Most difficult was to avoid mangoes which is  a favourite in summer season. After a wait of 1 year (rather 8-9 months) we get fresh mangoes. But avoiding it was must. Mangoes are a big-time enemies in diabetes.

So here’s what I started :

I avoided adding direct sugar to any of my food or drinks.

No ice-creams chocolates, cakes, waffles, desserts or any sort of sweets.

No coconut water (I used to consume it daily)

No mangoes obviously (but honestly I cheated sometimes, like once a week)

I reduced my one time eating portion. (after losing weight in 1st trimester I started eating more and more quite reluctantly in 2nd trimester so that I could gain some weight . (Facepalm))

I started taking smaller meals at gap of 3-4 hours.

Now the most important: I started walking outdoors daily. On my 1st day itself I started with 3km in 45 minutes and continued it. I walk 3-4.5 kms that is for 45- 60 mins. I try to walk at least 3-4 days in a week at least.

I started doing yoga daily. My instructor used to come only for 2 days in a week. Rest of the days practised on my own.

The results:

We have a blood sugar testing instrument at home. Within 2 days my blood sugar almost in normal range, but not normal as per my doc. After 10day the post lunch reading was normal but bit high in fasting. (It should be below 90 in pregnancy mine was 95).

My doctor asked to control more and quit protein powder with sugar. So I replaced it with diabetics protein powder.

Within next 1 week my blood sugar was completely in safe range and my doctor was quite satisfied and appreciated my efforts in controlling.
